Vernal Express Newspaper Archive
Kate Jean Boan was founder and editor of the Uintah Pappoose, the pioneer newspaper of eastern Utah. She purchased a printing press from Sears and Roebuck, and began publishing the four-page weekly paper in 1891. In 1892 she sold the newspaper to James Barker, who changed the name to the Vernal Express. James H. Wallis took over management in 1917, and four generations of his family published the paper for the next 90 years.

Ashley National Forest History and Culture
The High Uintas Wilderness contains remnants of both historic and prehistoric human activities that are considered valued cultural resources. Old cabins and salt houses, Indian artifacts, Spanish tree markings, tie hack tools, and equipment remaining from dam construction and even the dams themselves are all protected under Federal law. These vestiges of the past add an interesting dimension to the wilderness experience that is recognized by the Wilderness Act.

Utah Digital Newspapers
In 2001 the Marriott Library was awarded a Library Services and Technology (LSTA) grant to develop a newspaper digitization project. As a result, the Library successfully digitized 30,000 pages from three weekly newspapers. Later, the University of Utah partnered with Brigham Young University, Utah State University, and Salt Lake Community College to create Utah’s only keyword-searchable statewide digital newspaper repository. In September 2003, the library received a $1.02 million National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Brigham Young University made a significant contribution to the required matching funds. With this funding, an additional 240,000 pages were added.
In 2005–2011, Utah Digital Newspapers received three National Digital Newspaper Program grants from the National Endowment of Humanities (NEH). These grants combined for $1.08 million in funding and provided for the digitization of another 350,000 pages. This content can be found on the Library of Congress' site Chronicling America as well as on this website.
Utah Digital Newspapers currently contains 3.5 million pages from nearly 200 newspapers. Thanks to an agreement with Ancestry's Newspapers.com, we are currently pursuing a three-year project to digitize all remaining Utah newspapers.
